Symphony Towers – Marriott
Symphony Towers is a mixed-use development in downtown San Diego. It combines a 35-story office tower, a Marriot Suites Hotel, and a parking garage for 900 cars which spans over an existing structure, the historic Fox Theater. Symphony Towers is the premier office tower in San Diego, with the prestigious city club located on the top floor. Mr. Kronenberg was senior designer for this challenging project at Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill, Los Angeles. The project design successfully addressed several complex issues. The full block site sloped steeply up a hill from the office side to the hotel side with the historic Fox Theater in mid-block. The topography was taken advantage of by locating the speed ramps for the parking in the base of the Hotel. The parking garage was designed as a bridge structure spanning 180’ over the theater. The first six floors of the office building and the hotel are parking and ramps. Surmounting this bridge structure are the common areas of the Marriot Suites Hotel. Above the common level are the hotel and office towers. The design successfully addresses the combination of four different use in one project, giving each its own identity and resulting in a unified design.
