While working in the Los Angeles office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Heidi Hefferlin was part of the design team for the campus master plan for Mission College in Sylmar, California. The library and science buildings were designed as anchors at the ends of the axis of a large quadrangle, about the size of a football field, which formed the heart of the new campus master plan.
The Library is organized around a garden courtyard where students can take reading materials outside in the mild California climate. The stacks are arranged radially around this courtyard. The facility also includes classrooms, computer labs and offices.
