Pepperdine University Library

Pepperdine University is situated on a spectacular site overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Malibu, California. Ms. Hefferlin was the designer and project manager for this significant renovation and expansion project while at Kober, Cedargreen, Rippon Architects in Los Angeles.

The library is situated on a knoll above the academic campus and below the recently completed housing campus. This meant that a greater number of students were visiting the library from above than below. The project mission was to reorient the main entrance to accommodate access from the housing, which before the renovation had to enter through a back door via a narrow walk along the north face of the building.

Ms. Hefferlin responded this set of conditions by creating a landscaped courtyard that steps up the hill in the form of an amphitheater where students can meet and study. This courtyard incorporates handicapped ramps to gain access to the main level of the building. A new main entrance and grand stair was added. Reading rooms were rearranged to have views to the ocean and the campus below. The book stacks were reconfigured to add density. Toilet rooms were updated to ADA standards, and new lighting was installed to improve illumination levels.
