UCLA University Village
The design of this project was prepared when Mr. Kronenberg was Design Partner of Johannes Van Tilburg and Partners, in Santa Monica, a firm noted in Southern California for its design of residential and mixed-use developments.
The project is located along both sides of the San Diego freeway in West Los Angeles on property owned by UCLA. We won this project through a limited design competition. The project manager representing UCLA, Brad Erickson, was seeking innovative design solutions to a high density housing development for married students, their target program was 35 dwelling units to the acre, while maintaining strictly to a very tight budget. The project is comprised of 912 dwelling units and 66 faculty duplexes on a 31-acre parcel. A child-care campus and community center were also included.
Van Tilburg & Partners won the competition and achieved his objectives by organizing the dwellings in compact courtyards or quads, and parking all of the cars on grade in inexpensive garages along the freeways and tucked in underneath the apartment buildings. The parking structures along the freeway also serve as sound barriers to the freeway noise, which mainly travels horizontally.
The site plan represented on the following pages is largely the same plan presented in our interview with UCLA. The three-story walk-up dwellings are oriented towards Sawtelle and Sepulveda, the main local streets. The child-care center is located at the center of the Sepulveda site, and the administration building is located at the center of the Sawtelle site. The faculty housing proposed as duplexes was developed on another property, making way for additional family housing.
