Carta Shuttle Shelters

CARTA SHUTTLE SHELTERS

New Construction
Chattanooga, Tennessee

Architects: Heidi Hefferlin, Principal

Photography: Sarah Dorio

From the inception of this important urban design commission, we recognized that the design objectives for the shuttle stops went beyond the making of shelters. Most critical was defining the shuttle route visually, giving it a comprehensible structure by creating identifiable landmarks at each stop. Thus, the shelters serve the users primarily as navigational tools within the city, as well as shelter from the elements. The form of each shelter is an inverted glass parasol, evocative of a train shed, and suspended by a cable from a mast. The entire structure is stainless steel and laminated glass, differentiating it from its surroundings to enhance its identity within Chattanooga’s urban fabric.
