REFINED LUXURY LODGE

New Construction

Architects: Heidi Hefferlin, Principal

Photography: Sarah Dorio

This was a unique project both in its materiality and its construction process. The client purchased a cotton mill for the primary purpose of reusing the wood in a new home inspired by his time spent in the heavy timber structures of Jacksonville, Wyoming. HK Architects assisted in designing a home that would incorporate the repurposed heart pine, using the wood for trusses, cladding the walls, and even building a staircase—all while accounting for greater tolerances because of the age and diversity of the timber. The client is also a construction expert, and wanted to build the home himself with HK’s oversight. This was the second home HK Architects had worked on with this client, and the excellent partnership established during the first construction carried through the successful construction of this unique home.

The final home’s footprint includes three bedrooms, three and a half baths, and a two-car garage. Below the main living space, the basement functions as both a shop for the client’s motorcycles and extra cars, as well as a safe-house for tornados. We situated the primary living areas on the main floor, with two guest bedrooms upstairs. This unique project is exemplary of our experience dealing with the challenges of historic materials, and successfully implementing their materiality into a form that feels authentic at a residential scale.
