Holston River Cabin

The Holston River Cabin is a family retreat perched on the slopes of the Holston River watershed, nestled amongst the trees overlooking the river below. Built for a family who desires to retreat into the natural landscape of rural Tennessee from their hurried lives in the dense metropolis of Houston, Texas, Holston River Cabin is designed entirely around the site and its surroundings. The steep slope of the watershed required  a long, linear plan. This was a gift to the design, as it allowed the entire main living space to open up to the river below. A wall of glass sliding doors and ceiling height clerestory blur the lines of outdoor and indoor. Additionally, natural materials and finishes were used to bring nature into the space. Materials were chosen for the home’s exterior to help it blend into to its surroundings so that the home could disappear amongst the trees. As this was a retreat, low maintenance materials were a necessity. The roof membrane, siding, and decking all require little to no maintenance and will allow for the family to actually enjoy their time in nature rather than spending time tending to the structure. In addition to not making a heavy visual impact on the site, the design also attempted to minimize its foot print and site disturbance by perching the bulk of the home up on steel columns that allow the house to hover over the river below.
