THE WAYMARK HOTEL
The Chattanooga Bank Building, constructed in 1929 and designed by R.H. Hunt, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After sitting vacant since 2014, the structure has been revitalized through a historic rehabilitation that transformed the former bank and office building into the Waymark Hotel. The project includes a rooftop bar and a hidden speakeasy tucked inside the original bank vault. Historic tax credits supported the careful repair and restoration of character-defining features throughout.
The rehabilitation restored damaged terra cotta and granite elements and partially reopened the two-story lobby, showcasing historic coffered ceilings and crown molding. Original brass windows and accents were preserved throughout, maintaining the building’s rich material palette.
Working from original drawings, the design team ensured all interventions aligned with Department of the Interiors preservation standards. A local sculptor was commissioned to hand-sculpt and cast replacement plaster ornament, matching the building’s original decorative detailing with remarkable precision.
The interior design weaves contemporary finishes into the historic fabric. Guestroom layouts respond to the original marble-clad corridors and existing historic doors, while preserved terrazzo flooring is paired with vibrant accents and natural light from large windows to create bright, open spaces.
Above, the new rooftop bar and event space activate an area once occupied by elevator equipment, offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, river, and downtown, a modern addition that complements the building’s storied past.
